A moral victory

Moving to Pakistan means recognizing some of the demons of the past. Pakistanis stranded – those who wanted to choose Pakistan after the 1971 war – are such a problem. More than 200,000 of these people still live in more than 60 refugee camps across Bangladesh. In the past, efforts to return those who have suffered have not worked. In 2009, a case was filed in Pakistan, and was brought to court in 2015, but it offered no rest to the Pakistanis who were waiting.

Pakistan desperately lacks political will and rarely realizes that those who want to be part of the country at the moment of division are entitled to citizenship. As much as the Indians do in Assam, it is like asking those who have long demanded to own their homes to suddenly “keep” their promises.
